I live in the South and we have mucho bugs. Buy boric acid powder and put it (you can use a plastic bottle with a small nozzle and shoot it into outlets after removing the covers). It will drive roaches away as long as it stays dry FOREVER. If you have fleas, use Seven Dust from the hardware store. Put a small stream on the edges of the room, leave for two days, and vacuum it away. If you have rodents, like rats, call Animal Control for info. They have pellets you can put under the building by dropping some in each ventilation space that opens. Rats run the perimeter, eat it, get thirsty, leave to get water, and then implode. The only time you need a professional exterminator is when you have termites and if it freezes in the winter, they can't survice.

I have only hired an exterminator when I lived in Florida. Cost was $19 a month. They came out once a month and sprayed and inspected and would come back if a problem arose inbetween. This included inside and outside.
