It seems like the bad just keeps getting worse & worse...as if there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

I think it had to get very bad. To the point where you want it all to end and you'd like to completely start over before it gets better. Sometimes that means years, months, weeks, days.....it's all dependent on the situation.
