No you cannot "shake off' bipolar affective disorder by drinking alcohol. Where did you here this? You should drink no more than 2 standard drinks a day, the same as for any other person. But you should check to see if alcohol has any adverse effects on any medications you may be taking for your bipolar. You should never really binge drink, but none of us should! Alcohol is not bad for the DISORDER (not a disease), if you are sensible. There is no cure for bipolar but many people lead great lives with minimal medication and simple lifestyle changes. Good luck and i hope this helps,

Well, it's obviously not a good idea since alcohol is a depressant and Lamictal is more for treating the depressive side of bipolar, etc. That said, an occasional glass of beer or wine is tempting. Unfortunately, there's no way to know how it'll effect you until you try, and at that, it may effect you differently at different times. If you must, have a glass of wine or whatever at home when you have nothing particularly important to do the next morning. I've had a single glass get me buzzed and then felt hung over the next morning. I generally avoid the stuff because it's not worth it, and that's just small quantities. Getting drunk... forget it. It's taken way too much to get me stable and THAT is not something I will risk loosing. I'm on Lamictal and some other stuff if that helps as a frame of reference.

Alcohol is not the cure for anything believe me. If you truly have bipolar disorder then talk this stuff out with your psych. Drinking on a high makes the come down a lot harder and will only ever make things worse.

God no. Alcohol is probably the worst thing to mix with bipolar disorder. Bipolarity is often characterized by episodes of highs, called manias, and lows, called depressions. As alcohol is a depressant, this could have severe consequence while one is in the low part of their disorder, and if they are manic, it could send them into a depression. I would highly recommend not partaking of any drugs other than those prescribed if you suffer from bipolarity, as it may worsen your already risky episodes.

Alcohol actually aggrivates it. You'll get some relief for the brief period that you're intoxicated, but over the long haul alcohol makes the bipolar worse. Your highs will be higher and your lows will be lower. Much lower. Alcohol just makes the bipolar more volatile.

Bipolar disorder cannot be 'shaken off'.
Alcohol is probably the worst thing you can consume when you are bipolar.
If you feel things are getting out of control you need to talk to your doctor and get help to get things back under control.

Alcohol only adds to the problem, making you feel worse than better and in the long term could destroy your liver, kidneys or both, which will lead to an early end to your life. Please go and see your doctor and ask for more support and tell him/her how you feel and try to be honest with them, that way you will get the right treatment.Merry Christmas and I wish you a better new year.

Bi-Polar is not a disease, it is what happens when you have not grown up. Alcohol aids your run from the truth. If you want to find the truth, stop running. Sit still and let your conscience educate you about yourself.
