The USA did not only delay helping France and the United Kingdom at Suez, they actively told those countries to stop hostilities and get out of Egypt. The reason was that at the time the USA was trying to stop imperialism across the world and saw no justification in the old style of 'gunboat diplomacy'

Basically previous contributor is right.

The US vision of Imperialism harked back to the days of George III - God help us!!

The US were, and still are naive when it comes to Middle Eastern politics. By making GB and Fr withdraw through financial constraints, the west - especially the US - was seen by the Middle East as weak and able to be manipulated.

This has been continually demonstrated using the commodity Oil as a weapon of control - both financial and political - and they smile all the way to the bank.

One thing that Fr and GB have always understood because of their historic involvement, is how the Middle Eastern Arabic mind works.

Look at the situation in Iraq - the US completely underestimated how the Iraqis were going to use them. All they could see was "Hail the Conquering Hero We will save you from Saddam etc" syndrome.

When Saddam was toppled the Iraqi wanted the US and GB to leave - we were only a tool for their aims - but no we overstayed and look at the situation now.

Countless lives uneccessarily lost in a conflict that has turned into one of attrition - another Vietnam if you like. Thankfully at last the GB government has seen sense and we are leaving Basra.

The question to be asked now is where will the troops go now. Why off to Afghanistan of course - a place that after 10 years of stalemate the Russians withdrew.

The excuse again is - chasing Bin Landen.

Question does anyone care where he is? He just laughs at the West as he sends his video tape messages. Perhaps we will get a Christmas message - like the Pope and HM The Queen!! Something to look forward to.

How many more lives - US and GB - have to be lost for the various Governments to decide they don't care either.

And on that sweet cynical tone - Merry Christmas everyone.

HA! You might well ask!
The US wanted to tell UK and Fr that the age of Empire was over, but the lesson the Third and Islamic world got was that you can twist the ears of the west to your heart's content and no one will do anything to you. The 1979 hostage crisis in Iran was pigeons coming home to roost - hope the Americans were fkin satisfied.
