Personal Computers are made up of three main pieces. The first piece, looks like a box, and is called a “computer case.” The computer case contains all the main parts of the computer that does all the hard work.

The other two pieces are called the “monitor,” and the “keyboard.” What’s that? I missed something? Yes, you are right; there is also the “mouse.” But they didn’t always have a mouse; those came later after computers got fancier.

Hardware

We talked about the three main parts of a computer: the “case”, the “monitor” and the “keyboard”. The “case” is where all the hard work of a computer happens, and the “keyboard” and “monitor” are the pieces that allow you to communicate with the computer (see what the computer is saying and tell it things too).

Those three main pieces of the computer (case, monitor, and keyboard) are called the hardware. But the hardware by itself is not that useful. The computer doesn’t know what to do. You also need what they call “software,” that tells it what to do.

Software

Software is a program (a recipe or instructions) that tells the computer what to do. It may tell the computer monitor to display the word hello on your screen or tell the printer to print something. One of the most important software programs that will start automatically when you turn on your computer is the “Operating System”. Another shorter name for the “Operating System” is the “OS”.

Operating System

The Operating System is software that helps you interact and communicate with your computer. Once the “Operating System” loads, you can begin to do a lot of things with your computer like load other programs. Some of the other programs that you can load and run are like Microsoft Paint program or screen saver program. One of the ways you can give your computer the command to start a program is by clicking on an “Icon.” An “Icon” is a picture of the program that you can double-click on to start it. Or you can start these programs by looking for its name on the “START” sub-menu, and clicking the name.

Different Operating Systems

There are different kinds of “Operating Systems” that you can buy from companies. One of the most popular ones is called Microsoft “WINDOWS.” But there are other operating systems that are very good. In fact, there is an operating system that you can run on your computer that is absolutely free. The name of that free “Operating System” is LINUX, which is used in many workplaces.

The most basic things are the little SCREWS that hold everything in place. In some computers you also find GLUE and little RUBBER STOPPERS that absorb impact and vibrations.

I once found a decomposed fly inside my computer. I am not sure if you would consider that a "basic thing" though.
