The best free antivirus are Avast and Avira. Avira has a *slightly* better detection rate than Avast; however, Avast gives you email scanning and the ability to do a boot-time scan, which Avira doesn't. Also Avira has given me automatic-update problems every time I've tried it. This doesn't happen to a lot of people, but it isn't *uncommon* either.
So it's your choice (one only), but I use and recommend Avast.

Google the following

"Bit defender"
"Avast"
"Avg"

All three are freeware anti-virus programs. Although the Bit defender free version is not the first thing you see on their site.
