Well, my son is a success story!
He's only twelve though, so I don't know if that helps. But with a lot of intervention, he has made dramatic improvements.

Never let someone tell you that you won't amount to anything, you can do ANYTHING if you have the right supports in place. For my son that means that he has to work really hard to stay organized, he uses special papers to help with schoolwork, as well as a LOT of computer time. With the computer, his work has improved by at least 75%. He has OT and other physical exercises to keep his brain wired more efficiently, lots of physical exercise that he enjoys (bike riding, rapelling, climbing, hiking) It took him a long time because the way his brain is wired, but even by 12 he's a lot better.

There's a book that might make you feel a lot better about yourself. It's Chicken Soup - Children with Special Needs. It's got some terrific inspirational and moving stories and it's an easy read.
