A belief. Some people are successful with little work. Next question is: what is your definition of success? Money, prestige and a place high in the rat race or waking up and feeling good about what you will do this day--even if you are living in a cardboard box?

You can work hard and stupid all your life or; you can work hard and smart!
Working hard and smart gives a greater return on your investment of time and energy. Any factory worker can work hard for eight hours a day six days a week for thirty to forty years and end up with a small pension to live on just above the poverty line.
Working hard and smart for thirty to forty years will guarantee a wealthy life. In and out of retirement.
Hard work will feed, clothe and shelter you, but do you want more? If so ...work as smart as you hard.
As for success that is "a state of mind", it differs with every person you meet, or know. Right now we would have about six billion different defenitions of " success ". When you come right down to it success is a state of mind.

In my view, hard work is neither sufficient, nor even a must for success. A complex variety of causes, known and unknown, get together to make any success to happen...... and not all these causes are brought into being by the person who is crowned by the success. No one has ever found any magic formula for success.

There is a saying that goes "The best preparation for GOOD WORK tomorrow is to do GOOD WORK today."

Hard work may lead to success but the quality of work you do today will determine your success for tomorrow and not how hard you work things out. :)

How you do the work rather than how hard you work is I think what matters the most.

it is a belief, success depends upon many factors . hard work is one of them. work hard and know that success comes when the last nail is hit by the Lord. and it is the truth.

As I learned from piano practice, people can "work hard" dilligently for hours and days and weeks and months and not get anywhere because they were practicing in unhelpful and not particularlly intelligent ways (been there, done that, bought the postcard!)
