I'm 16 and I live in Ontario, Canada and my goal is to eventually move to the US and eventually become an American citizen. I have relatives in NC, I've been there to visit a lot, and I've traveled with my parents all over the eastern US and I really like it. I'm hoping to eventually go to university in the US, and then get a job and become a permanent resident. I've never figured out why I am so attracted to wanting to live there, but I just am, and I even have a small American flag in my room. My biggest interests are American history and politics.

There are two problems with that. The first one is that I'm living in an environment where most people are anti American. I overhear nasty comments about Americans and the US in general, almost every day from kids at school and even adults in stores, malls, etc. Everyone in my classes thinks that it's stupid that I want to move to that "dump to the south". It makes me so mad but I just try to ignore it.

The other problem is that I get the impression some Americans are against immigration because of the issues with Mexico and I’m not sure if I would be welcomed in the US. For example, I asked a question about immigrating to the US from Canada (legally of course) on the immigration category, and most answers were along the lines of “just hop the fence, everyone else does it” or “sorry, we have enough immigrants in America, stay home.”

Because of all that, sometimes I wonder if I should just give up on wanting to move to the US. If you’re an American, do you think I should stay where I am? Is it really that weird that I’m a Canadian who likes the US as much as I do?

If you want to move to the US and become a citizen, go for it. Do what makes you happy. The US isn't glamorized by outsiders for kind of obvious reasons. But what about Canada's problems or Mexicos or some other country? I worked with a lady in early 2000 who came from Canada but is a citizen today. I'm not sure how she viewed it, but she came here and made her life in the US. If people in the US complain about immigrants, tell them to shut it. There are problems with it but I tend to think immigrants are more of a positive thing here. Many immigrants work the dead end jobs that pay 10 bucks a day (I really don't know what the pay is- that was more of a hypethical statement). If we didn't have immigrants working on farms/fields we would pay a lot me for produce and then Americans' would complain about that as well. I was born in California and still live here and people seem to want want want- everything should go there way or it's not good enough. Overall do what makes you the happiest and don't let people negativity bring you down or think otherwise. Good luck =)

Follow your heart. I honestly believe that people's energies are connected to certain areas and they are happiest there. I moved to Florida from Pa. and am very happy here. I know others who have moved very far away and been delighted at their new locations.

Besides, if you find it isn't for you, you can chalk it up to life experience and move back. But if you don't move, you could regret it for the rest of your life (or else become one of the numerous Canadian snowbirds that arrive here about this time of year!) I adore Canadians myself, you guys rock!

And for those who don't like American politics and such, well many of us here don't care much for what's going on lately either. A link to a great site featuring Americans apologizing to the rest of the world for Bush's re-election is posted below.

And thank you for your pleasantly thought out and well written question.

Don't listen to them. If its something you really want to do then go for it!
I personally hate it here. It's soo dull and boring and i think ppl in teh east and south ar epretty rude. People are much nicer here in the west :)

I'm also 16 and really want to move to quebec. It's soo interesting there :)
Don't let others get in the way of your dreams.

Our gov. is pretty screwed too.

As an American I think you should live where you want. It takes some time and effort to get US citizenship but I know several Canadians who've done it.

Since you are planning to go to college here, you will have ample time before graduation to see what life here is really like and then make an informed decision.

I'm an American, you're better off staying in Canada....this country is rapidly falling apart, with almost zero prospects of recovering from the levels of superficiality, corruption, and outright rape by big business and special interest groups....

We welcome anyone who wants to do it legally.
We don't like those who don't.

As Bob Barker used to say, "Come on down."
