At the university that I work at, the requirement to earn a baccalaureate degree is roughly 124 credits. Keep in mind that if you have an excess amount of credits, you may be required to obtain approval from your college (department). Part of the reason they limit the amount of credits you can take is because, they want to make sure that you are on the right track as far as your curriculum goes and that if you have already taken your graduation requirements, you should petition to graduate. Any coursework that you take after you earn your baccalaureate degree, technically should appear on a Graduate-level transcript.

Granted you should be allowed to register for coursework that you are interested in and can afford, but colleges have accreditation standards and Federal guidelines to uphold. Check with your academic adviser about registering for coursework that is outside your major.

Best wishes on your college career!

You can take whatever you want as long as you are willing to spend the time and money you can keeping going to college forever. The only catch it you wont get a degree until you complete the right units for the degree. I am an engineering major and take a music class just for fun every semester it doesn't count towards my degree but i find it fun and a good stress relief.

You can take more than the required number of credits, but be careful that you don't avoid the courses you need to graduate and just take random classes forever. At most schools you are welcome to take classes outside your major, but they won't substitute for the requirements.

You can take as many classes as you want, as long as you are able to keep your grades up and pay your tuition!
