How do I get my files on the Internet? My host is Lunarpages... but I don't know what I need to do next.

My web hosting talks about FTP. I used to do that from work, so I know a tiny bit about it. But isn't there a simpler way? There are several methods of FTP they suggest, and I don't know which they are or which to use or anything. Can't I just transfer the files to the Internet?

FTP is the easiest way.

If you are using Windows XP there is a built in FTP client (although its not the best). Just go to 'My Network Places' and double click the 'Add new Network Place' icon. You will need to know the ftp server, your user name, and password. These should have been provided to you when you signed up with your host.If they weren't you will need to contact Lunar Pages and ask them for that info. Once you have set up the 'Network Place', double click on the LunarPages icon (or whatever you called the network place) and you can simply drag your website files from your computer to Lunar Pages.

I have a website (http://www.music-whiz.com) and I personally use a program called FTP Surfer to upload my files. There are plenty of other ftp clients around as well.

Some hosts allow you to upload your files through their website by loggin in. If your website only has 2-5 pages then you could upload them that way. If you have any more files than that it will take way too long to upload.

As far as your domain name goes, you need to tell the internet where your website is stored. That way, when someone types in www.yoursite.com, the internet will be able to find your host. You will need to go to the website where you registered your domain name, log in, and find somewhere that you can update your 'name servers'. Lunar Pages will have it's own name servers so you will need to get their details off Lunar Pages. They will probably look something like ns1.lunarpages.com and ns2.lunarpages.com.

By updating your name servers at your domain registrar, everytime someone types in your domain name their browser will look for your website at Lunar Pages. Lunar Pages will have an entry in their name servers that says "this website is stored in this folder."

IF you run into any problems with your domain name, remember that it might take anywhere from 5 mins to 24 hours for your name server change to take effect (although i've found it usually takes about 20mins.) If you are still having trouble after that see if Lunar Pages has configured their servers to direct your new domain name to your account.

IF you need any more help please send me a message on my profile (or through my website.).

Cheers,
Richard

If you have setup your domain's name server to point to your hosting server, you can simple use the command ftp yourdomain.com , enter ftp login and password , you will be in your web hosting file manager account. Or else you may contact a web designer at websites like http://getafreelnacer.com/ to help you out.

If the host allows you to use your browser to upload the files do that or use a ftp client to upload the files you want to your site...

yea they allow ftp access then there should also be some ..browse.. select file.. upload tool there somewhere... or maybe you could use something like.. http://www.fileden.com/

but why not ftp? ..i mean.. if you use something to create your pages like.. http://www.webpage-maker.com/

..then you could create your pages... then enter your ftp information and your stuff is just... there... with no hard work done by you.. at all..

This is pretty basic stuff, Read the link I furnish.
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/F/FTP.html
Most Web hosting services simply have an Icon that says Publish your pages one at a time to your web hosts server.
It must be done one page at a time.
If you have developed the site including all the anchors, or links and they operate correctly you must PUBLISH it to there server.
