I have about 50 pictures of my g/f and i that i want to make into one collection to set as my desktop background. Does anyone know of any good programs to do this with, possibly ones that are free?

If these are a collection of single ptctures you will need to use one of the many Photo Editing Programs.
Create a new Blank Page and then cut and paste the collection one at a time how you want them and then save as and make the new page JPG as well.
Special Note:
All of the pictures you have are hopefully all at the same DPI to make it easier.
When you have your picture at different dpi the larger dpi pictures will be a different size than the smaller dpi.
They will not be the same size when you cut and paste them.

I use Photo Shop now, but prior to having that, here's what I used to have to do:

Upload all the pics you want to use to Photo Bucket or another hosting site.

Copy and paste the pictures into Paint and arrange/size them.

Save as a picture file and upload back into Photo Shop. Or, if you are using a Myspace layout generator that permits it, upload the final picture from your computer into the generator.

There are collage generators out there, but they are typically geared towards icons, and you often have to resize your photos first, which can be more trouble than it's worth.

Photoshop, Fireworks, Flash, and other professional programs are difficult to use for beginners so it is probably not even worth your time to download the free trials to try and create your own collage.

This is simple, easy, free, and basically will do all the work for you...

A beautiful picture of Hawaiian jungle backed by pretty blue ocean. Taken from my friends front porch on Maui.
