I'm in Australia and as far as I know we don't have an online register here, but I sure wish we did! I think there's some privacy law against it... HA!

I've browsed the US ones, trying to track someone down. I couldn't believe how many of the people in the pictures were SMILING! It was rather nauseating....

This site can be used for any state in the US, you can search by name or address and it has a profile of each offender. If you type in an address it shows you a large map with dots to represent each offender...click on a dot and it takes you to that offender's profile. It's by far the best one that I found

I urge everyone reading this in the US to type in their street address, town and state to check to see how many are living near you...you'll be in for a shock.

Edit: oops, I see you already posted a link to that site...my bad!

I have not checked mine and I live in the town where Joan's Law was inspired. It's not like I can do anything positive with the knowledge I would gain from the registry. I am certainly not going to drop my guard over my kids if there are no listings in my area. So all I can do with the info is worry too much, worry too little, or get angry and do something stupid so whats the point? Plus - I am not really sure I agree with the concept. I am quite sure at least 1 person, somewhere, has been placed upon one of those lists wrongly. I cannot see how the lists can help anyone so all they can do is harm. Catcher: Hmm - flip through the pictures - maybe there IS some point to it - but still, isn't an unknown face just as dangerous as one we see on the listing?

Absolutely. I have a daughter and I want to know what sick creeps we should be watching out for. My state's registry even lets you sign up to receive emails for when a sex offender registers anywhere near you.

Yes, and I FREAKED OUT because there were literally THOUSANDS of sex offenders in my county, but then I noticed that 98% of them had the same address, and it turned out to be the prison that's in my county! Lol! Had me scared for a minute.

I've visited something similar and it turns out I live very close to some sex offenders. Creepy, hm?

These comments are a prime example why a little information in the wrong hands is a dangerous thing.
