Because morality is necessary to form a society (Leviathan), without which life is less pleasant. Also because the society should be aiming to maintain itself, and will punish you for acting against it.

XXXX has it right: Hobbes puts pleasure over pain as the moral principal in Leviathan, the basis of the social contract.

I agree with the last two. I don't know that Hobbes view is the same as moral. It is just self interest. If this is moral then Machiavelli is moral.

I didn't know Hobbits really existed. We should be moral because when god created the hobbits he also created the elves,orcs,goblins and all. we must treat all as equals no matter if we have tusks protruding from are jawls or not. Life is scared and not to be taken lightly and even gollum has a soul.
