what was told to me is that there really is not a big differance between the 8400GS and the 8500GS, and the reason is this, the DDR2 memory. they are the same memory and runs at the same level, more or less. the 8500gs is a faster processer but if the memory can't handle the processer theres no real improvment. sometimes it depends on the maker and you'd have to check on that. you could have a card that has 512MB memory that runs worse then 256MB. in most cases you will not see an imporvment with upgrading a card less than two levels. this will show you what i'm talking about the levels. www.tomshardware.com/2007/12/03/best_graphics_card/page6.html... in your case the cards differ by about 4 levels, so depending on you system it might be better, i would ask myself why he wants to trade a "better" card for a "worse" one? i guess if it really works and is free, take the card and run, but i'd see how it runs on his computer before i trade.

i retract my statment, i just looked at newegg.com, the 8500 is Memory Interface of 128 over the 64 of you card. take his card and run.

8500GT w/GDDR3 memory for the win.

Better yet, the 8600 or 8800 series.
