There is 2 type of data storage in your computer- RAM and the hard drive.

Hard drive- stores information even if its powered off.
RAM (Random Access Memory)- Stores information only if its powered on. If its powered off, then everything in RAM disappears. RAM is used to store temporary data, or a place where a hard drive can access randomly. RAM is not used to store your data unless its powered on.

Memory is permanently stored on a hard drive, so the memory wouldnt just be erased(unless you did something to the HD). However, provided you didnt have another one with an operating system installed, and plugged in, you wouldnt actually be able to do anything with the computer.

No..the memory will not be erased if it were removed, as long as you stored the hard drive in a safe place....

why you want to remove it, Hard disk dont have memory, it is a storage device where you can store the data and programs, if it is secondary hard disk then if you remove it nothing happens, if you have only one and windows installed on it then you system wont start. Ask what you want to do actually, then i will explain all details about that.

No, hardrives use magnets to store the data, on a magnetic sensitive disk.

The only way that the data would degrade, or be lost is if the hardrive is subject to extreems of temperature, like below 0 C for a long period of time(like a full winter season), or to extreme heat.

Or of course if you unplugged it with the computer still on...

***DONT DO THIS YOURSELF***

I did that once, but i unmounted (kindof like ejecting) the drive first. It worked fine, but crashed the computer when i tried to plug it back in..

IDE hardrives are not hot plug-back-inable

What would happen : You cant boot anymore if its your main hard drive... it has all your data on it.

No, its solid state memory, so it wont be erased no matter how long its out. (within reason, if you leave it out for a year, it may be damaged.)
WARNING: This hardware is very susceptible to static. if you intend on leaving it out, get a protecting bag for it.

No, the harddrives are made for long term memory, most is burned into the hardrive disks.

nothing would happen.
all of the memory would still be on the harddrive, but your computer will not run without a harddrive in it
