HI Ann, the reason you don't hear about Goldfish in natural history is because they are a man-made species. They originated in China & Japan from wild Carp. They were selectively bred for their colours & shape over thousands of years & it was only relatively recently they were exported to the West.
The fat bodied, fancy types are particularly delicate & don't do well in ponds, however the regular 'fish-shaped' types such as Commons, Comets, Subunkins & most Koi are physiologically identical to wild fish so do well in ponds-they can all interbreed & happily intermingle with captive wild Carp, however due to their usually bright colouring they would easily fall prey to predators [including man] if they were released into the wild so large tanks or ponds are an ideal home
They can't live in the ocean because they are freshwater fish-because the sea is salty only fish adapted to life in the ocean can live there. There are several places where Goldfish [& other non-indigenous] fish have been most irresponsibly released into the wild-survived & bred with the local fish population producing hybrid fish that play havoc with the eco system.

I'm sure you've heard of goldfish ponds. They're exactly that. They are also in lakes, but are called something else--know you have heard this name for fish before, but never related it due to it's size as just an overgrown goldfish. However, I am drawing a blank as to what it's called. Maybe someone else knows, out there!? Very common name. I do believe, however, goldfish don't survive in saltwater areas. However, when I was little and my goldfish would appear something was wrong, sick, my Mom would always put a pinch of salt in bowl and alot of times they would revive.
As you can see, I'm plain just bored as well. And, really don't know. Bowls, Yes. Ponds, Yes. Other then that????? Have a good night, what's left of it. Hope you find something to do.

Goldfish are carp that have bred over many generations in China to their current forms. Koi are carp that have been bred in a similar manner in Japan, but are a different species.
Both can survive in ponds, as was their original purpose They can live in lakes and rivers, but shouldn't be released their because they can destroy the environment. Due to their bright colors they are very easy prey for predators in any water.
Goldfish cannot survive in ocean water because they need freshwater not saltwater.

Everything but the pond...unless it was a fish pond with a waterfall. I grew up with a cabin on the Illinois river. We vacationed on a lake almost every weekend and about once a year, we would go to the beach. I still do that today plus I have a house with an inground pool. I love to swim. Who am I kidding? I just love being in or atleast near water. I can have a blast but relax at the same time. Nothing beats being in the water.

They're related to Carp. Thus they can live in Streams, Ponds, Lakes, Resevoirs, Rivers... Basically anything freshwater. Not Oceans.

BEST ANSWER YET!
They can live in lakes, streams and ponds because those are all fresh water and they can live in a fish bowl or a fish tank in your house if you use fresh water but however they can not live in the ocean because that would be salt water and the goldfish will then die because it can only live in fresh water!

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.
According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

Goldfish are found in nature in the far east. Such as China, Vietnam, Asia,Cambodia,Japan,etc.. in streams and creeks.
They also do well in ponds, such as the goldfish variety known as "koi", these can get fairly large.
They cannot live in the ocean, because the ocean is saltwater, and goldfish are freshwater fish.
They could live in small lakes I guess, but I do not know of any varietys that are found in lakes or large rivers.

Goldfish are just mutant Asian carp. They can live in most fresh water where other carp species can make a home, though they don't really do well in extremes of heat or cold. They can't live in the sea or in brackish estuary water, however.
