December 12th 2012 is the last day of the Mayan "long count" calendar. But all that means is that the Mayan calendar starts over again, and it no more means the earth is going to end then does hitting 100,000 miles on an older car (so that the odometer reads 00000) mean that the car will quit running.

People have been predicting the end of the earth for a long time and guess what, we are still here. The only thing that is certain is that in roughly 5.5 billion years our sun will turn into a Red Giant, and the earth will get so hot that all the seas will boil and life on earth as we know it will be impossible.

okay, i may not make a lot of friends, especially Mayans, but THE MAYANS WERE NUTS!

its not just about their calendar ending, sheesh! Take a look at their crazy method of dividing time. instead of neat little 10/10/10 or even the odd 60/60/24 they use 20/18/20/20! Thats pretty suspect, dontcha think? Where'd the 18 come from?

And their alphabet... don't get me started. In English we have the letter "S". Okay, a line that kinda snakes from upper right to lower left. In Mayan we have a pictograph of a man hitting another man on the head with a coconut. It would take you all DAY just to spell Mississippi!

This is missing the whole "How can they tell what is gonna happen in the future?" question.

Since i heard about the planet nibiru i have done nothing but read up on it.
The sumerians were an ancient race who knew the solar system has 12 planets, they were a lot smarter than us.
http://www.subversiveelement.com/Sumerians.html
http://www.geocities.com/engvaj/Sumerians.html
The mayan calender ends on this date as it is the date niburu passes the earth and the polar shifts will occur.
And nostradamus also predicted this:
http://nostradamus2012.com/
The earth has survived many fly-bys before as the planet nibiru passes this way every 3600 years, and causes global climate changes, its said it has already began as it is already entered our system. Apparantly you can already see it from the most southern point on earth and we will all be able to see from 2009 with the naked eye.
people who scoff at it are much like those a 100yrs ago when the earth was certainly flat and earth was most definately the centre of the universe
We can survive polar shifts, we have before and we will in the future, Im not trying to scare anyone its not the end of the world just the end of the world as we know it.

What you're hearing isn't just "weird." It's all just plain old nonsense. The *only* significant thing that will happen in 2012 is our sun will approach the plane of the Milky Way's equator, align with that plane, then move away from it. This has happened thousands of times in the past, and no disasters happened anywhere in our solar system.

Definitely do *not* pay any attention to claims that Earth's magnetic poles will reverse in 2012. Even though such a thing has happened countless times in the past, it takes at least a thousand years from the beginning of each reversal to its completion. This is scientific fact and not silly speculation.

As for the Mayans predicting the end of days, i.e., the end of the world with their calendar, that's still more bilge. The Mayan calendar was far different from ours and much, much longer. Their "end-of-days" is nothing more than the equivalent to our new year.

I'm a God believer, but also I like to see the History Channel documentaries. According to Mayan calendar, Dec 12 of 2012 will be the end of times. The mayas thought the they were Iiving in a circular calendar, so they concluded that date will be last one. I don't believe. Just God knows when that is going to happen!

I'll turn 55. There will be no event of greater significance than that. Don't believe the bilge about end of world or other such nonsense. There are enough REAL things for us to worry about and do something about (eg. global warming), so don't waste any energy on that. Just remember to send me a card.
