how can i make my own figures?

I would like to make, picture frames or other stuff, and paint them. Which would be a good material for it, and how can I make it? and where can I buy the materials.
Also something good for molding, I would like to mold some other figures, that I can't find in the store anymore.

My local craft store sells a powdered substance that you mix with water and it makes a soft mold. You just stick your object in it and it creates a mold of that object.

Picture frames depends on what you want to make it from. You can carve wood, do polymer clay, ceramic, whatever is your favorite medium.
