My mother was working behind a soda fountain in El Paso, Texas. It was 1940. My father was a recruiter in the Army (7th Cavalry, mounted); his office was down the street. He used to come into the store for lunch and coffee, etc.
My mother said he was the most handsome man she had ever seen. She was 19, he was 34. She said he always sort of hung around leaning on the counter talking to her and she was dumbstruck, being a kid.
On Valentines day, 1940, he came into the store right about closing time. Said he was looking for a Valentine box of candy for his best girl. Mom helped him pick out a nice box and card thinking what a lucky girl she was.
When he paid for the candy, he handed the box to her. Mom said she just about died....not knowing what to do or think...but she took the candy. He asked her to go to the movies with him...and the rest, as they say, is history.
They were married a month later. Dad got transferred to Plainview, TX where I was born in December; 9 months and 2 days after they were married. World War II came along in 1941 which separated them for years but they still managed to have my 2 little brothers....
I still have the top from that box of Valentines candy; faded, roses crushed, velvet ribbon looking a little shabby but a wonderful keepsake. I also have the diary she kept for the year of 1940 with all the "girlie" thoughts she had about Dad, their marriage, finding out she was pregnant with me...and, finally, my birth in late December of that year.
What a treasure to have......

My parents were both widowed from previous marriages when they met. My father's first wife perished in the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1919-1920. My mother's first husband died from the effects of alcoholism. They were introduced to each other by my father's former brother-in-law. The courtship went on for about a year. They married and I was born a little over a year later.

My Dad was in Plymouth , England, going to school. My Mum's father was a merchant seaman, on a cable-laying ship which ran between Canada and England. When she was about 15, the family moved to England to be near their father more, and she went to the same school as Dad.
They "courted" for some years, then when she was 21 the family moved back to Canada and she and my father wrote to each other for a few more years. In 1938, my dad wrote to her, (I have the letter) "There is going to be a war. If you will marry me, come now, or it may be too late". That letter went on the first air-mail shipment between England and Canada, and when Mum received it, she packed her bag and got on the first ship out of Halifax. She arrived in England in September, and they were married in November.
Pretty romantic ! They were the loves of each others lives.

Mine met on a blind date around 1948. I recall my mother telling me about. The meeting was was set up by a friend of hers from work (both were operators for the local phone company and room-mates, and then friends for almost 60 years). Dad's friends were also friends with Mom's friend, so they were all in on the plan.

Mine met at the American Legion 1976, depending on which one you asked you would have gotten a different story about who confronted who. The story is it started with a dance and were together ever since, until my father passed away in 1995. My Mom went on to be with him after 10 years with out him. I am sure they are dancing up in heaven now.

In the early 1950's my dad lived in Ark., mom lived here in Okla. He came here to do some farm work and anything else he could find to do to make money. My grandma let my mom come here to the town we live in now to help an aunt of hers so mom could make some money as well.
One day when mom went to town to get a bite to eat, her and dad met. He asked her out on a date, with her moms permission she went. They dated for a good while. All the time that dad was dating mom, he was dating other women as well. Mom did not know about this at all. Dad was looking for the right woman to take as his bride. Mom didn't know this either, marriage was not even on her mind.
One day dad picked up all the women that he had been dating as well as mom. He had mom in the front seat by him (she was the last on that he picked up). He told all of them that he was looking for a bride and had made his mind up as to who he wanted IF mom would have him.
Mom never thought any more about it and one day he came to her house. Ask my grandma for mom's hand in marriage. The he went to mom and asked her if she was ready to go. Mom asked where and he told her to go get married. She was very surprised, but they got married that day (another story). Grandma really didn't like it at the time as there was a big age difference in them.
They have now been happily married for 55 years, almost 56.
