Thank you you this wonderful question about optimism and pessimism. In fact, I would like to see post this question on polls and surveys. The results could be telling.
To answer your question though, although all of my training tells me the right thing is for people to be optimistic, I tend to see the darker side of things first, before I see the brighter possibilities of a situation. I do believe that the line about playing poker from an old Kenny Rogers song is appropriate:
"Every hand is a loser and every hand is a winner." It's all about how we play the game, and the brighter possibilities really are more fun in the game of life (or reality).

The darker side, it is just so prevalent, this not to say that I don't see the brighter side I do just more of the darker side.

I'm sort of a pessimist so I see the darker side, but I'm always happy if things turn out well in the end... a big plus is I have a good sense of humor so it keeps me sane through it all.
