Forget the rigid grading standards which are actually someones opinion and aren't so rigid. Yes a coin does need to be grade but in your case a 1972 even in mint state is worth little. No it is not silver, the dates of the silver ones 40% are 1965-1970. I go to the bank often and ask for 1/2 dollars, sometimes I get a few rolls, sometimes I don't, but I usually find 40% silver ones stuck in with the copper-nickel clad ones and ever a Franklin once in a while which is 90% silver. Keep looking.

Not necessarily...values of coins are determined by rigid grading standards. The most valuable coins are those that never circulate...if you found this coin around the house, then chances are it will only accrue a certain amount of value...however, even circulated coins that are in very good condition can be worth more to collectors than face value (ranging from several cents more to several dollars more). Marks like scratches, dirt, or faded text on the coin will decrease its value (you can tell markings very easily by looking at it under a magnifying glass). If you thoroughly inspect the coin and think it is in really good condition...take it down to your local certified coin shop and have an expert look at it...don't go thinking you have a fortune...but it may be worth a little more than $.50.

From 1965-1970 they were made in silver-clad. It is silver bonded to copper with half the silver of the 1964. 1969D is about $3.00 1969S is about $8.00
