They weren't really linked. McCarthyism is similar to the Witch Hunts because it started with accusations. People accused women of being witches, leading to them being hanged; the McCarthy guy began accusing people (some famous people too) of being communists, leading to them be black-listed.

They weren't linked by any cause-and-effect relationship, but by their similarity. Just as the witch trials led to more and more people being accused of witchcraft, with each new suspect pressured to implicate others and the accusation being so hard to refute, the McCarthy investigation worked the same way. Each person accused of Communist leanings or associations was pressured to name others involved in such activities, and to be accused could ruin a person's career even if he was never actually charged. For that reason, the McCarthy investigations have even been called a "witch hunt."

Then, as a suggestion, mention how one incident used fear of black magic, satanism, (or a similar concept) to persecute individuals that were not afforded due process and relied heavily on the unsupported accusations by individuals who were fearful of being labeled witches and used those accusations to mitigate their behavior or to cast off attention from themselves.

McCarthyism would replace black magic, satanism with Communism.
