You need to get into the BIOS. I think with compaq you hit F1 or F2 instead of delete to get to the BIOS. Try all of them..numerous times upon first power up. When you get to the BIOS, set it to the default values..because it sounds like someone has messed with the BIOS that does not know what they are doing (system options not set)
Next, I am concerned about the CMOS checksum invalid..To reset that, REMOVE YOUR CMOS battery for 1 full hour, then put it back in. That will re set the CMOS defaults. Of course, unplug your computer before removing CMOS battery. You could have a bad CMOS battery, but usually that means it wont "hold" the date. That is, when you turn off the computer, your date will be something like Jan. 1, 1980.
Finally, make sure:
1. Your memory stick(S) are seated fully and both tabs are down.
2. The cable to the hard drive is fully seated and the cable is not on backwards.
Finally, go to www.kubuntu.org and download or order the CD (for FREE..shipping also free) go to "shipit" Put the kubuntu CD in and it will test your hard drive because it will run from CD rom drive "live". You may not have an operating system on your hard drive. Use the free one at kubuntu.

try reinstalling the whole operation system. if its a new computer then seek for technical help. havent heard this kinda problem before, i prefer to run a complete virus scan within that 20 mins.
