We have what I guess you'd call a double-wide garage door (2 car garage, 1 door) and have been thinking about having an opener installed. In the middle of the garage, and consequently, in the middle of the door, we have a floor to ceiling support beam. It is approximately 8 inches from the spring for the door at the ceiling. Is it still possible to have an opener installed? I was doing some research and read that the opener should be position in the middle of the door.

Thanks for any advice!

Thanks for the quick responses! It looks like I left out one detail. The current door is a 1 layer steel door.

Also, I was planning on hiring a pro to do this work.

No, It's not necessary to be in the middle of the door. The springs maintain an equal weight throughout the door.
I do recommend professional installation unless you have a lot of experience in mechanics and woodworking. The springs on the door can be very dangerous.

I installed my own garage door opener when I built my garage. It is fairly simple. You should not have to worry about springs or cable tension as the springs and cables are used to reduce the weight of the door (not connected to the opener itself), and you should not have to mess with them. The instructions on your garage door opener should give detailed instructions on the proper installation. Good Luck!!

Here's the answer where the beam won't be a problem. It mounts beside the garage door:

Below "included accessories:, click "owner's manual"
This will open in PDF file.
Under "bookmarks" (left hand side), go to "INSTALLATION"
Go to STEP 1 (Position the Opener)
This will show how/where it installs.

I'll take my points now, thanx

Most opener instructions recommend centering it in the center of the door,I would guess its because if you used an off center position it would stress that side of the door.

if the opener is offset one way or the other to clear the support post, it will still work. Just make sure it's bolted/screwed to wood.
