Touchpads allow for mouse movement simply by dragging a fingertip across a surface. Beneath this surface are grid-like array of sensors, which detect the skin of a person. Touchpads use a technology called field distortion sensing, a form of capacitance-sensing technology. When the surface is touched, the fingertip distorts the electrical field at that spot.
Other objects like pens or pencils cannot distort enough this electrical field, so they can't be detected.

The touch sensors on a built-in mouse pad are typically capacitive, meaning it will only sense another object with a capacitive field, such as your finger.
The type of touch sensors where you use a stylus are resistive, meaning they sense a change in resistance when you apply pressure.
