They are fake, the advertising campaign is claiming they are real or based on real events. Attempting to recapture the idea, buzz, and success of past ad campaigns for films like The Blair Witch Project, that claim to be true but in actuality are not.

It's not real: "The Poughkeepsie Tapes is an independent mockumentary horror film released in 2007.[1] The narrative is presented as a documentary pieced together from a fictional serial killer's amateur footage."

Sounds like it should be a documentary about a large, unnamed, corporation, thats biggest plant is in Poughkeepsie, NY, that has done a good of screwing their employees, especially the retirees, in recent years.
I may get booted for this answer, but I was one of those employees.
Yes, it would be a horror story.
If you know Poughkeepsie you will know what I am talking about.
