Well during the war the soldiers living conditions varied depending on where they were stationed and what time of year it was. Obviously it was never pleasent being on the front lines because you were being shot at but if you take that out of the equation then living conditions weren't bad most of the time. They ate food packets full of the nutrients needed on a daily basis but low on flavor and whenever they overran a German camp they would eat their food too. Of course there was always what family and friends would send too (usually candy or sweets of some kind).
During the winter on the Russian lines the Russians were fine but the Germans would freeze with their steel toed boots and cotton uniforms. On the western front it was pretty cold too and in the winter of 1944-1945 the conditions were horrible. That is when we were fighting the battle of the bulge. It was really cold (many soldiers recieved medical treatment for frostbite that winter) and soldiers were forced to stay outside fighting without adaquate protection (the ground was frozen preventing them from digging foxholes for cover).

When the war was over and all the Soldiers came home they adjusted back into civilian life. It wasn't quite as they remembered however because during the war many women went to work in factories and became much more independent so they definitly had to adjust. But many WWII Veterans went to college under the new GI Bill and many brought home war time wives whom they started families with. They also had to reajust for their friends killed in the war while they were gone. After the readjustment period however they fit back into society quite nicely and now you would hardly ever know some of the veterns fought in the war.

When they got home as veterans they lived like the rest of our society. In a rapidly expanding economy with babies being born all of the time. Thus the baby boom.

They often went to college and got a degree and started having babies. (Some were married already, some got married after the war). They also got help in buying a house when they were ready for that. They tended to be fairly prosperous and to make up for lost time in terms of marriage, children, and career.
