I like the idea of small government and lower taxes, since as any economist will tell you, taxes cause dead weight loss which shrinks the economy and hurts everyone. But I disagree with him on several other points.

But anyways, is there any other candidates that support small government, meaning limited social programs and reduced defense spending?

Yeah, traditionally republicans were for small governments, but that doesnt really seem to be the case within the last few years.

No, I think it's Dr. Paul, or more of the same.
All the rest are owned by someone, and most support the current tax structure.
Huckabee supports a flat tax, but he is the only one.

Fred Thompson has promoted a return to federalism, which would mean small-ER government; but I doubt he would take it as seriously, or as far, as Ron Paul would.

It bears mentioning that much of the problem of governmental overgrowth comes from Congress, over which even the most earnest President has limited influence.

NO candidate of either party, other than Ron Paul (R) and Dennis Kucinich (D) is likely to actually reduce defense spending.

We heard the same talk from Reagan, Bush Sr, and little Bush........reduce size of government, lower taxes, cut federal spending. Under Reagan and little Bush we saw the size of government growing at record levels, government spending topping itself year after year, our national debt climbing up and up, sputtering economy and rising inflation rates. Why do you think Paul would be any different?
