Your 55 is a grand old girl, but they were smokers. 25 to 1 is the ratio. Be sure you use an oil with a TCW rating as these oils are formulated for marine 2 strokes. You can buy Quicksilver or OMC 2stroke oil at Wal-mart now for about 10 bucks a gallon..either wil do the job for you.Pennsoil and Valvoline both haveTCW ratings too. Give the old girl the best you can afford. I would strongly recommend not running a ratio less than 32 to 1 . look up..oil ratio for Johnson outboards in your search engine.

stick with the expensive brand oils, they are worth it
modern oils are much better at lubricating than they were in 1955 and the 50:1 mix will do just fine.
make sure you get the oil for water cooled engines, some are for air cooled engines and are formulated for different operating temperatures.

50:1 is the proper ratio to use with modern tcw-3 oils. Your motor will smoke quite a bit with any oil. Use Johnson/Evinrude XD-30 oil. It is the best oil for your motor.

1955 is 40:1 mix your to light on oil which will make the fuel thin and go threw the jets to fast>Any will work>TCW 3 is ?????The old Eng's weren't designed for all the oil mixes of today>And they smoked like heck as 60% of the fuel used was for cooling the piston & luberaction>>

cheaper brands dont make more smoke they just break down quicker. excessive smoke comes from inproper mixture of oil to gas ( to much oil)

the name brand ones such as Valvoline tend to smoke less and run more efficentaly but they all do the same job. If you want cleaner go with Valvoline or Mobil brands they are the best.
