Cheating the chump or just playing?
Just playing, you take 1 face card, often the queen, and 2 non-face cards. You bend them in a slight V toward the front so that when they are laid face down the card stands off the table at the ends like a pup tent or roof. You then show the cards and locate the Queen ("the little lady") or whatever the face card might be. You ask someone to make a bet, to lay down some money and tell them after you move the cards, if they can pick the queen, you will give them twice their bet back. You then spread your hands so you can catch the cars with your thumb and middle finger. You then make a series of dizzying moves, swapping the cards and shifting them until you set them down and ask the bettor to point to the queen. You either flip that card over or pick it up with the same grip and show it and either collect the bet or pay double. This is exact odds. If you play long enough, you and the bettors will end up even.
The first method of cheating is to palm the queen while you are making your moves and replace it with another non-face card. After shuffling, if you want the mark to win so he will make a bigger bet, you pick up the two other cards, show they are not the queen and pay the bet. If you want the mark to lose, you show the card he selected. You never flip over a card (which might lead the mark to flip others) and you never give the crowd or the mark a rest - as soon as the card is shown and money paid or collected, the cards are shifted and calls for another bet are made.
One stunt that is done is one of the crowd bends a corner or otherwise marks the queen, while you are distracted. This can be a confederate of yours or someone opposing you. You, of course notice this (especially if your man did it). The mark bets heavily and when the cards finish moving, all of them are marked the same way!
The game works by handling the cards in a way that seems to assure that you could not palm a card, and practice until you can, and practicing moving the cards so that you can pick up any card and lay it down and know where the cards are but anyone watching your hands sees dizzying circles and figure 8's.

If you know a person who does the "three card monte" and is willing to show you , that is the sure way, There are books on card tricks and sleight of hand which might discuss the game. What does the internet say?
