During the holiday season, a lot of unstable individuals come into retail establishments to pick fights with sales staff. Being polite never gets anywhere, as these particular people will find any possible way to start a confrontation. Police calls escalate during the holidays because of these public disturbances. Any advice on how to handle these "special" cases?

Be polite but firm by telling them that this is a busy time of year and you have a lot of work to do or tell them you can't talk to them on days that end in Y.

i encounter people like this everyday. The number one thing to do is keep your cool. Don't lose our head. If your like me you can tell pretty quick what a customers intention is. If they are going to be a hard time and not buy anything have them escorted out. Maybe you need some type of security during the holiday season.

Sometimes you got to be firm and let them know that their behavior is not tolerated--like a mom with a toddler.
Some other times, you have to just walk away, after telling them their behavior is unacceptable-ignoring them-like with a brat.
Still some other times you gots to pull yourself together and look them straight in the eye, and tell them it is a good day to die if they don't leave right away because the cops are on the way-this lets them really know you mean business!

call security or request some type of protection...maybe a gun under your desk(doesent even have to be loaded)just to scare them if they try and pick fights
