The sound you hear is the unburned gas exploding in the flue pipes when it finally ignites. Check that the stack is not blocked first. Birds are notorious for building nests in these places during non-heating seasons. Need also to get the heating system checked out by a pro. Hope this helps!

Light the pilot and after a minute blow it out. If you heat a click in less than ten seconds then it's probably the thermocouple. Replace it. The problem could also be a lazy pilot flame if it's burning yellow or is too small to heat the thermocouple properly. In this case you'll have to get the pilot cleaned. These are the common problems, it could be something else.

An oil fed boiler with a pilot light? We have been in the heating and air conditioning business for many years, and specialized in oil fired equipment, and never heard of this situation.
Just what brand of oil burner uses a pilot light? usually they have an oil pump and an electric igniter running from a high voltage transformer.
Sounds like a joke question.

I agree with Opal, oil boilers don't have a pilot light, only gas units have pilot lights.
If your oil boiler isn't staying on, and you have to reset it, you probably need the new ignition module, or cleaning/servicing of the unit, like filters.
If its a gas unit, and the pilot light isn't staying on, its most likely the thermo couple, or a down draft keeps blowing out the pilot light.

thermal couple....if it has one. 99% of the time that is what will kill your pilot light.
