X means a kiss while O means a hug. When I was in school and got a Valentine from a girl it was always better to have plenty of X's over O's.

*i understand the X comes from early early instances whilst human beings ought to no longer examine or write so as that they signed an X and then kissed it to seal a deal and that i think of the O section only stemmed on from that. The X additionally stood for Christ.
