Here's the tragic part of it, to the largest extent neoconservatives have successfully proved one clear point - nobody gives a sh*t. Barring serious inconvenience, the might of the US military can be brought to bear to "solve" the fringe interests of even a marginal allies like Israel - (marginal ally simply because of the repeated betrayal of our alliance on so many occasions (USS Liberty, repeated espionage / mole incidents / failure to act in our interests or provide valuable intelligence)). The open actions of neoconservatives being blatantly incapable of working in the interests of the US, to the point where it's an "open secret" that Israeli hard-line interests are served, rather than those of the US. So long as an unexpectedly large number of troops don't get killed, and nobody comes asking us to actually PAY for the war, the US citizenry rather couldn't be bothered with actually restricting our government to strictly necessary wars - such as the counter-insurgency in Afghanistan. As far as the actual events of 9/11 the tragic incidents will likely never be known. Without indulging conspriatorial rhetoric we KNOW that the US intelligence community had enough information to reasonably act to secure or beef up passenger inspections on flights and did not do so. We know that higher level personnel were advised not to fly domestically on commercial airways from July of 2001, that was enough to simply notify the public, this was not done, which - we now know is not a conspiracy - it's just incompetence. It's not sexy - it's not secret and involved - but considering the buffoonery we've seen on other less-critical issues, it seems clear that an actual conspiracy is far less likely than being tone deaf to reality and profoundly incompetent.

There are millions of people who believe our government participated in - or, at least, knew about - the 9-11 events.
Whether that's true or not deserves harsh and intense scrutinizing, particularly when you consider how often our government has lied to us in the past:
* FDR supposedly knew about the Pearl Harbor attack, but allowed it to happen - knowing it would lead us directly into World War II;
* The military has never satisfactorily explained the events of 1947 in Roswell, New Mexico, especially to those who lived there and witnessed the alleged "UFO" invasion;
* The Warren Commission was a sanitized "investigation" of JFK's assassination. Since documents have been sealed for seventy-five years - until 2038 - most of us who were alive and witnessed that murder won't be here to examine or challenge the documents;
* Our government lied about U-2 spy planes flying over the U.S.S.R. until Nikita Khrushchev shot one down and displayed it for all the world to see;
* The Pentagon lied about U.S. battleships being 'attacked' in the Gulf of Tonkin, which lead us directly into the Vietnam War;
* The military lied about affects of Agent Orange on Vietnam veterans;
* The White House lied about a third-rate burglary in the Watergate Hotel until two young reporters dug out the truth, forcing the resignation of a U.S. President;
* The Regan administration lied about an illicit 'arms-for-hostages' deal that eventually became known as the infamous Iran Contra scandal;
* The Bush administration lied about 'weapons of mass destruction' in Iraq, leading us directly into an illegal, unconstitutional, unjustifiable, immoral was with another sovereign nation that in no way threatened, provoked or attacked the United States;
* The government lied about the torture and sexual abuse of 'detainees' in direct violation of the rules of the Geneva Convention, until a whistleblower posted photos on the Internet.
It is naive, unpatriotic and reckless for anyone to accept our government's "word" for things. As citizens, we have the right - and obligation - to question our government's leadership and to hold its feet to the fire until everything is proven conclusively beyond any shadow of doubt. The "investigation" into the 9-11 attacks took far less time than the "investigation" of Bill Clinton's adulterous sexual liaison with another consenting adult.
It is shameful, reprehensible and careless for the citizens of the U.S.A. not to doubt our elected officials and bureaucrats' "word" for anything, especially in an era where the Fourth Estate no longer exists within the national media.
That is not to say that 9-11 was - or was not - an "inside" job. But there is credible evidence by witnesses and expert analysts that suggest our government might have been involved. One has to wonder why the debris was so quickly disposed of, and much of used to build a new U.S. battleship, instead of being securely stored for further investigation and testing over a period of years. As those who actually 'own' this country, "we the people" deserve better of our government, and should expect more of ourselves. If we are so gullible as to accept the government's version of events without doubt, skepticism or examination, we are headed down a slippery slope that will only lead to our waking some morning and find our country being ruled by a dictatorship. -RKO- 12/14/07

No he does not.
I myself have felt the pull of the conspiracy theorists — who believe that 9/11 was an inside job, somehow pulled off by the U.S. government. For the record, I don't believe that the World Trade Center was brought down by our own explosives, or that a rocket, rather than an airliner, hit the Pentagon. I spent a career in the CIA trying to orchestrate plots, wasn't all that good at it, and certainly couldn't carry off 9/11. Nor could the real pros I had the pleasure to work with.
