I think it was a rush appointment. They had till next september to appoint somebody, for the 2010 South African world Cup. Qualifiers.
When they appointed Sven Goran Ericsson the F.A. said he had a lot of sucess with european clubs, not doubt he has, but he wasnt a proven International Manager. Capello will be exactly the same, great european club pedegree but no international experience.
If Capello is any good, why hasnt he been the Italy Manager. If this had happened in France, Germany or Brazil there would be a national outcry.
But as usual we are supposed to sit back and let it happen, But if we complain we're accused of being little Englanders.
I've got to be honest if we couldnt get an Englishman to manage our national side, I wanted Jose Mourinho.

Seems like very good value to me if Capello can put an end to English hoofball mentality and get them passing on the ground to open the opposition up. English tactics are barbaric compared to most other nations.
And by the way.... if you were really so bothered about it.... you wouldn't have put "British identity"..... cause it's England national football side. I know just as many people who'd be very narked at a Scotman or Welshman managing England.... whats the big difference from that to an Italian?
LMAO at replies below..... listen up.... Arsene Wenger and SAF do NOT want the job of England Manager. They are happy where they are. Stop dreaming that they ever wanted the job. Get in to reality.

We cannot expect a Enlish manager like harry redkanpp to take over and win something for england. That is not gonna happen. This guy Cappelo has been known for his match fixing and his reputation of winning titles everywhere he goes. I think we should be calm and look what the FA does. Sven was not a looser. He was not a good manager. Cappello can do something at england and i hope he will.

Do supporters realise that, even if they are on good pay in normal work, they will probably never earn that sort of money in their whole working life?
Yet we are willing to pay this out for doing, at best, a part time job and with lots of perks.
Football , as a whole, cannot stand the strain of parting with this big money all the time, to coaches and players. The game as we know it, could soon be history.
Perhaps that's what we need - a fresh start!

It is a disgrace but acknowledges how ineffectively the FA have governed the game for too many years. To think that Britain started soccer and that we now fail to compete with much smaller nations. We have allowed this ineptitude to continue for far too long and we, as a nation, accept graceful defeat with joy and understanding. I recently saw that someone had suggested that Henman be knighted for his contribution to tennis, what a laugh! Unless we accept the fact that we are a nation of overweight people who fail to strive for excellence in all elements of our lives, including all types of sport, we will remain in the doldrums, economically and physically and our sporting achievements will continue to decline.
I hope that Capello will succeed in motivating the England team for it is not the coach who brings success but the team that plays on the field.
Respective governments have failed to understand how sport forms such an important aspect of our mundane lives and it is imperative that they provide an effective stimulus with the view to bringing back the world cup/ european cup to Britain within the next 10 years.

who do you think is a better qualified (english) manager then?
curbishley - won nothing
redknapp - won nothing
big sam - won nothing
there aren't any english managers with the pedigree to run the national team. mclaren proved that. a brief stint in the uefa cup does'nt take you from mediocre to great in a season.
for the record i wouldn't have went for capello, I'd have given arsene wenger a blank cheque to come and do the job.
jude: your right, those managers would fit right into our obsession with punching above our weight!

football these days are about slack jawed wags, dump the bitches and stop complaing, no one acually cared about when Gazza became an alcholic, probably killed his wife and family, and who remembers when we actually won the world cup, it was still alright to hit your wife and children back then. look at the state of brazil, they still live in the jungle and tree house's but still they win the world cup every few years, italy ain't much better, last month - inter milan fan shot for going to football match or on the way to one, same difference. it seems the worst state of your country the better the teams, that or the rest of the world take pity on them, exception japs, saudi arabia, cameroon. and a few other's not to metion.
why the hell was shearer shortlisted for the job, maybe to give Gazza a return into football, i could imagine it, `wey eye mon` and the likes of ` watch outz man on` Northerners
maybe we english don't have the right attitude to sports anymore, Sideline Cheerleaders. Half Time Entertainment. Scrapping of the nation Anthem. incentives such as if u win you get to sleep with my wife at least then sven would had a reason for being there, i myself don't have a wife but if i did and england won the world cup i would be more than happy to accomadate the england team into my wife, twice, thrice and even four times over.
all i'm saying is to think with a bit of english pride
cocks and socks not wallet and watches

I'm starting to think no matter who got the job some of you would pick them to pieces irrespective. For goodness sake no one knows how he will go but give the bloke a chance. He has been on the job a day and everyone is all over him already. No wonder no one wants the job.
It doesn't mean you will lose your identity. How do you know he as no respect for National identity. I didn't see too many with his CV putting their hand up, English or not.
