At least according to the movie Fright Night, if you don't have faith in the "sacred object" it won't work.

Different cultures have different outlooks on the story behind vampires.

Some are just crazed human beings, some are cursed, some are infected.

The cursed variety, typically, cannot look upon sacred objects.

old school vampires cannot look upon a sacred object because they are in league with evil (the devil). modern vampires are agnostic, so they aren't bothered by sacred things.

Because they are athiest so they dont believe these objects can hurt them, oh and i heard that holy items dont actually hurt vampires its just when people were hunting them they always used them so the vampires associated holy items with death pain or mobs...

Because holy items are just bits of wood and/or metal that are nothing to be scared of and the sooner the 'old school' vampires see that the better.
