What about the 2006 poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko? You could write it as a sort of "Cold War Re-heated" narrative. For a quick overview see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Litvinenko_poisoning

Another possibility is the assassination of Olof Palme, prime minister of Sweden, in 1986 - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olof_Palme_assassination

Good luck!

Unsolved assassinations are very rare, because of the difficulty of getting access to the leader and all the watching eyes. I suppose the "hunting accident" in which William II Rufus of England was killed might qualify IF it was an assassination. And there are those who believe President Warren G. Harding of the USA was poisoned by his wife. But there you have it. If there isn't a known assassin, it also isn't known for sure if there was an assassination.
