early last week I visited a certain Jewelry store in town w/ my mom. I decided on a diamond and the engagement ring. I told the guy I would come back on Saturday to purchase it and asked him if I needed to put anything down to hold it. He told me that I did not need to put any money down and shook my hand and told me that my handshake is worth money. Well when I came back on Saturday to purchase the engagement ring I found out the diamond was sold (but the engagement band he still hand). He said he needed to order me another diamond (same quality, etc.) but it would take 2 weeks. I left the store again shaking his hand and telling him I cant wait to get the diamond and purchase it from you. Should I buy it from this guy or just go some place else because this is no way of doing business. Anyone else been in this kind of situation?

If you specifically asked him to HOLD the piece you saw, he understood, then he sold it to someone else, then that means he didn't keep his words. He probably never does.

If you agreed on the price and quality but you didn't ask him to hold THAT piece, then it's just misunderstanding of your/his intent.

Buying a diamond from someone means you trust that person to tell you the truth. The quality and price go hand-in-hand, and for an ordinary person, it is impossible to tell the exact value. If he isn't keeping his word, then that says a lot about the way he conducts his business, thus the merchandise he carries.

Think about that...

By the way, when I buy a jewelry, I am VERY specific on the conversation I carry with the sales person. I confirm and double confirm the intent so we have no misunderstanding. If the person doesn't do what he/she says, I am walking out the store.
