About a year ago I did not get along with my boyfriend very well so we broke up and I signed a room mate release form with my signature, his signature, and the complex's manager signature on it. After we broke up, he got evicted like 4 months later. Now I get a collection notice in the mail saying that I owe them money for the eviction too! I call the complex and they say that the form we signed together did not mean anything, regardless to the fact that I no longer lived there when my ex-roomate! Does that make sense to anybody??? I thought a contract was a contract?

I agree - this sounds like you are getting screwed. You need to contact a real estate attorney and get a free evaluation. When attorney's see someone for the 1st time, they don't charge, find out what they think about it. But you shouldn't have to pay, and if they put the collection notice on your credit report, then sue them for that! Good luck.

I went through some of the same thing when I left my ex-husband. I got a bill for damages to the apartment after I signed a document releasing me from the rental agreement. I contacted the rental office and spoke to the manager and she said not to worry about it. I never heard from them again, but they did go after my ex.

See if you can find an attorney who offers free consultations. You need to talk to one even if you have to pay. I hope you have a copy of the contract.

I don't know what the 'roommate release' form stated. If it said you were released from the lease, you are NOT liable. If it did not, you are liable. What the COLLECTION agent says is about as reliable as what the plumber says.

You can deny the claim or pay but you have to be reimbursed by your ex. The only problem with the contract is that it is under your name.

Sounds like you need to talk to an attorney.
