The QWERTY keyboard was made to be easier to type, all the uncommon letters (like Z and X) are barely used, so they are far from the center.

Believe it or not, the reason a standard qwerty keyboard is the way it is, is because it's kind of hard to type on. Originally remember, this thing was a mechanical typewriter, and if you got too good at typing the levers would jam against each-other. Qwerty w2as developed to me moderately inconvenient, but still usable, so keys wouldn't jam in a typewriter.
There are other layouts like Dvorak which are better suited ti high speed typing.

It's easier to type.Alphabetical order would not work as well. People can type faster because of the positions. If we had A, B and C where Q, W and E are, wouldn't it seem harder? I have 80 WPM (Words Per Minute) and if it was in alphabetical order it would screw me up greatly. The letters are in different orders so that you can type words easier and it wouldn't be as cramped. People would accidently press down more buttons than needed, so people arranged the keys to where they fit well.

The QWERTY key board was disigned to allow the most used letters to be evenly split between both hands. This division allowed a much faster punching of the keys. You have to remember that originally this was on typewriters. It took a lot more strength than it doen on a computer. By standardizing this format anyone who has taken typing can use any standard keyboard for computers or typewriters.pp

Because when there were type writers (ancient), the levers got stuck if the most used letters were used in a quick order. You can buy keyboards that are more alphabetically friendly, but no business uses them and so you just have to learn it.

Originally the keys on typewriters were in alphabetical order, but people would type to fast and the keys would get jammed. So the makers randomized the keys to slow down typists.
And no, this isn't B.S.

It is set out the way it is because the letters that are most used are together. If you use "F" and "J" as your "home" keys then you will not have to lift your hands from the keyboard when typing.

The keyboard layout was originally invented for mechanical typewriters.
A problem occurred wheret the swinging stamp ends of the keys, would hit each other and jam.
By having the so called 'qwerty" layout, minimised this problem.

Sholes one of the dudes what invented typewriters back in the day had real problems with the bars colliding with each other and jamming. so he arranged the lettering in such away as to minimize this from happening. And its been that way ever since. it also helps with typing-the letters can easily and quickly be typed using both hands.
