Traditional European observance varied from region to region and from one time period to the next, but generally included some common traditions. An oak log that had been chosen on the previous Winter Solstice (Yule) was decorated with pine snips, generally containing pine cones as well. Notes written on small slips of paper containing good wishes for the upcoming year could be tucked into the foliage as well. The log was then burned on the beginning of Yule with chants to honor the Oak and Holly Kings. Efforts were made to keep the log burning for the entire Yule celebration. It was believed that the ashes of the Yule log contained magical qualities if kept.
