I'm watching Carolina/Calgary on Centre Ice - Rogers Sportsnet Feed -

Erik Cole trips Eric Nystrom - and a penalty is called (and this was an obvious penalty - the three blind mice could have seen it).

The announcers basically patted themselves on the back because the referee called a penalty.

Are they always this bad?

I hear ya.
The penalty was obvious. All they had to say was 'the ref calls Cole for tripping' and leave it at that. Everybody knew. Had the refs missed it (Nystrom had the puck so not much of an option) then you can talk about it all you want.

Bob, I'm like you, I am reading answers, reading stats, following games online...all while listening to the TV. I glance back and forth too.

Pathetic isn't it LITY? The mute button can often be handy but usually I am kind of half watching the game and more listening in while reading up stuff on-line so I have to put up with the nonsense. One of my biggest pet peeves though. I actually find it is that way in alot of sports but hockey especially. I feel like going through my TV screen and wringing their necks.
The guy who often does Vancouver games (Jim Huson) is one that I don't mind to much, you know the guy who looks like Barbie's Ken.
Sometimes I think I am just a bitter hateful person but I can't stand 99% of these guys.

I don't know about always, LITY. But I watched that feed The other night with the Panther/Calgary game as there was no local broadcast. They did seems clueless . I turned the sound down and just watched.
EDIT : Duffman. The other guy in the Panthers booth is Steve Goldstien. He used to be the radio broadcaster. he was also a radio personality on WQAM. He knows hockeys but yes he is a huge homer. They are not the absolute worst the Panthers have ever had. Their original play by play guy Chris Moore was horrid.

It seems to me that hockey announcers are just going downhill. Even Emrick seems to be losing it....last time he called a game I think he used the phrase, "shmear job" about 4 times, which is 4 times too many.

They can't be worse than the Panthers' announcers (Denis Potvin and What's His Name the play by play guy). Potvin's voice makes me want to perforate my own eardrums. And a little "Homerism" is expected from team's broadcasters, but the amount he displays is over the top.

Since I've had the Center Ice package, I've come to the conclusion that every team's announcers are basically homers. Not surprised though. They're only human, and they are usually fans of (and close aquaintences with) the players on their home team. Also, remember that their main job is primarly 'reporting to' (read - entertaining) to the home team's fans, even though nowadays they are broadcast all over.
