Because there are fewer spots at the top and everyone below is chopping away at your foothold, trying to get there in your place. To stay at the top, you have to continually improve on a stellar, peak performance, and it's hard to do that.

Because you set your mind and are persistant and determined to get to the top, once you reach the goal, people tend to slack off as if mission is acomplished. The thing to remember is, get to the top but don't celebrate till you've claimed territory at the top.

People see what it takes to get there, and when they copy the top dog and add what they have to offer sometimes its more enticing then what the person on top has to offer.

because a new standard was set, and people will try to exceed the standard... so once you are on top you have to try to exceed your own best - because everyone else will be too.
