there are many candidates to this question since college football has been around for 100 years.. p.bear bryant at alabama/texas a &m, tom osbourne/nebraska, bobby bowden, florida st, j. paterno/penn st, n.rockney/notre dame, pete carroll/usc and e.robinson/grambling st... each could make an argument, but i think the game is faster, players much stronger than in many past years, but that doesnt diminish there accomplishments, all has won multiple tittles except robinson.... but with my personal experience with the game,... memorial stadium in lincoln with that wishbone offense was very hard to stop... even after stepping down, nebraska continued to win because of his effect with recruits for years with frank solich, without a doubt former senator tom osbourne is and was the greatest football coach of all time...

Switzer? He probably leads in players arrested. Spurrier? He isn't even in the top 30 coaches of all time. Bear Bryant, Knute Rockne, or Joe Paterno. Personally I would take Knute, but I wouldn't argue with the other two. Osbourne was a good coach, and a class act, but 94 still bothers me. Penn State should have had a share of that national championship, but everyone voted to give it to nebraska so Osbourne could get one, since he was so old and never won one, then the guy coached for ten more years, and won two more.

Given his retirement at an earlier age than some of the gentlemen currently coaching with more total wins, Paul Bryant had a better overall winning percentage, and more games won, in the shortest amount of time in Division 1 footabll. He was also able to perform well at every team he coached (with the exception of MAryland where there was significant conflict with the athletic director and previous coach).

Many of the responders have mentioned some superior coaches, and we know their names well, because bowl games and awards are named for them, as they were instrumental in the formation and foundation of college football in the US.

It is, however, most significant, that the Cach of the year award for NCAA Division 1A is the Paul W. Bryant Award. I guess someone else felt he was the best coach.

Paul Bear Bryant led Bama to 6 himself...so Id say him....followed closely by Pop Warner (3 NC with Pitt and Samford), Joe Pa, Bobby Bowden, and Woody Hayes.

Paul "Bear" Bryant of Maryland, Kentucky, Texas A&M, and Alabama.

Close second is Steve Spurrier of Duke, Florida, and South Carolina.
