Scent and behavior.
Many animals are very good with scent.
Birds are not good with scent, and don't use it. In some bird species, the male looks different from the female. In the species that look the same, the male will approach another bird. He will try to cuddle. If it's a female, she will go along with it. If it's a male, it will fly away or peck at the other bird to make it fly away.

It IS obvious....to them.

All sexually reproducing species have someway of discerning the males and females of their species from each other. Appearance, behavior, odor, pheromones, songs, etc. are all methods that animals use to advertise their sex and identify that of others. Oh, and males and females have different genitalia.

How can you tell a man from a woman?? It's obvious to us (even though we conceal our genitalia!) but not always so to other species.
