Here is a break down of current political parties:

Libertarianism: A political ideology that is opposed to all government action except as necessary to protect life and property.

Anarchism:
A political philosophy that opposes government in any form.

Liberal:
Those who are willing to use government to promote equality but not order. They also favor a centralized government as opposed to state rights.

Conservatives:
Those who are willing to use government to promote order but not equality. In contrast to liberals they favor state rights over a large national government.

John has a good answer. There are different aspects. A fiscal liberal means more government funding for the public. A political liberal generally wants a dynamic government and is open to change. Philosophically, liberal can also mean open to different ideas, and does not just apply to politics.

Likewise, conservatives have different aspects. Being fiscally conservative is wanting limited government spending. A social conservative generally doesn't want change or wants to change to an older style of America.

But, it is possible and common to have a mix. The popular flavors seem to be social-liberal fiscal conservative and social-liberal/conservative, plus others.

Good question. The terms mean nothing in US politics.

Liberal is a combination of the Latin root, "Liber", and the Latin suffix, "Al". The word means relating to free.

Con-serve-ative breaks down similarly. Con means we, serve means "take care of" or "maintain", ative means "those who", loosely. we who work together to maintain.

Essentially Liberal really means "free to change" and Conservative means "keep things the way they are".

Of course neither of these things is accurate when it comes to US politics.

"liberals" want abortion laws to stay the same and "conservatives" want abortion laws to be free to change.
