If you sell a donut for $1.00 and the sales tax is 6% you would calculate it as follows:

$1.00 X .06 = 0.06 (6 cents)

If you want to find out what an item costs including tax:

1.00 X 1.06 = $1.06

Sales tax varies from town to town. For example, if the tax is 5%, you would multiply the total sale by 5%. The tax on a $100 sale would be $5.00.

Sales tax rate, as a decimal, times the amount of the purchase. 6% as a decimal is .06
