Its hard if its a nice wool fitted cap (like a fifty nine fifty) because they will shrink so be careful. You know this if you have ever sweated in a wool cap eventually it shrinks to the size of your head. So I dunno here . . .

A cotton hat should be fine just washing it like the above post in one of those hat holders that they should have at some general store like target or something.
