How can it happen when there is no such thing?

2007-12-14 11:32:42 · answer #1 · answered by Troasa 7 · 4 2

No. The 2012 idea came from some stupid pseudo-documentary on television and everybody else with their breathless prophecies of doom have latched on to that date. The date was determined on the basis of two pieces of information, both of which are not only incorrect, but are utterly absurd.

So now that it has become a big popular myth, everybody else wants to get in on the act: the Apophis people, the Nostradamus fools, (again!), and the idiots who claim that Eris or Nibiru or Planet X will somehow be involved in destroying the earth. There is no Planet X or Niburu. And Eris, a tiny minor planet that never comes inside of the orbit of Pluto, is also being recruited into the myth. But these little facts don't stop the doom-o-philes.

Apophis, which was never a part of the 2012 nonsense, will find its way into that myth. Well, we're talking about a field which flourishes in the absence of facts or any semblance of rationality or reason. Apophis will pass closely by us in 2029. In 2036, it is due to make another pass and that will be very close. The estimates of its probability of colliding with us have been declining as we gain more exact data. Even if it does end up on a collision course with us, we have many years to send a rocket up there and nudge it off course with a few nukes. It's only about 400 meters in diameter.

So relax. It isn't going to happen. Don't listen to hysterical, ill-informed people. And don't become one. Learn about like most of us did. Study legitimate sources of information. And whatever you do, don't trust ANYTHING you see on Fox, the History Channel, or the Discovery Channel!

I have survived the widely publicized end of the world six times, (that I know of). I'm going for a personal record of seven. My heart might stop me, but no comet or asteroid will.

Lindajune, well put.

i recommend starting a website. put all your beliefs on it, regarding asteroids, end-of-the-world, Planet Niburu, the dead coming back to life, and anything else you can think of. Be imaginative, as content, especially verifiable content, doesn't really matter.

then watch the hits!

you might put up a forum, let people post whether they agree or not, but you be forum-master and delete the bad ones. it's your webpage, right?

then spread the word... on the playground between classes, about the End Of The World in 2012.

Don't forget to make copies of the website! So you can do it all again for 2015!

Nibiru is a hypothetical planet mentioned to be orbiting our solar like that of a comet. each 3,600 years it passes between Jupiter and Mars. some say that it hit a planet that was between Jupiter and Mars and created the Asteroid Belt. some say it even led to the super Flood. it relatively is doubtful if or whilst this so noted as planet will return. maximum say this is going to arrive on 12-21-2012 for that's the date that the Mayan calendar stops. in case you inquire from me i think of all and sundry is making too enormous a deal approximately this. the possibility of this planet even being actual are like a million in one trillion!

What collision? There is no asteroid in a collision course with us up to now.

There are currently no asteroids with a torino impact hazard scale rating greater than 0 scheduled for the year 2012. The only known potential impact hazard at the current time is asteriod 1950 DA, scheduled for potential impact on March 16, 2880 which is in fact the only known asteroid who's impact hazard is above the background level (based on the statistical analysis of geological records of the previous impacts with earth) with an impact probability of at most 1 in 300 which is 50% above the background level as defined by the Palermo Technical Scale (PTS value = +0.17).

So simply put there are no known asteroids that may strike earth in 2012, this does not mean it is impossible we have not yet detected and tracked all near earth objects, asterioid 1950 DA on the other hand has a very small impact risk and having the unusually long potential warning of over 800 years means that we have ample time to prepare a deflection strategy.

More information on asteroid 1950 DA is here http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/1950da/ and the rest of the site http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/ is very informative with respect to NEO's (Near Earth Objects) and impact hazards well worth reading if you want to know more about the subject, it is unfortunate that the media sometimes picks up and runs scare stories on asteroids with impact hazards of only 1 on the torino impact hazard scale (which goes up to 10 btw) and is defined as thus:

"A routine discovery in which a pass near the Earth is predicted that poses no unusual level of danger. Current calculations show the chance of collision is extremely unlikely with no cause for public attention or public concern. New telescopic observations very likely will lead to re-assignment to Level 0."

So it is unwise to read much into media stories about impact risk, if you want information on such objective scientific sites such as the one I provided above are your best source.

No, if that asteroid would be coming towards us, action would've been taken by the most powerful governments on earth since they found its orbit. It takes a long time to destroy it or change its direction.

Definitely not..! Take the time and look over this website which shows all upcoming approaches by asteroids, the date of closest approach, etc.,.http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/iau/lists/CloseApp.html

You cant predict when a asteroid will come. It probably will get drawn into jupitors gravitational pull and flung out of a solar system or into the sun. or maybe into the earth

Hi. We do not know when the next large body will hit Earth. Period.

No. Its just another "doomsday" story, designed to scare the gullible, to sell stuff to the naive, and to line the pockets of the doomsayers.
